How they differ from a sandal
The strap sits higher here — it wraps the ankle rather than the foot just above the heel. The heel counter is usually firm, or at least reinforced by the strap, unlike the open back of a sandal. And the instep strap tends to be wider. Together that makes a shoe that holds considerably more securely.
Why they hold best
The ankle is the narrowest point between foot and calf, so a strap that wraps it stops the foot sliding forward. At height that matters enormously — the foot sliding towards the toe causes most of the discomfort in a high heel. If you want to see out a long evening, this is the style to reach for.
Strap width and the line of the leg
A slim ankle strap reads delicately and does not visually shorten the leg. A wide strap holds better and looks bolder, but on a shorter frame it can cut the leg in two. If you are unsure, choose a strap in the same colour as the rest of the shoe — the transition is then far less abrupt.
Materials and colours
Black patent is the most practical and goes with everything. Nude shades lengthen the leg because they blend with the skin. A clear ankle strap gives the same effect and holds just as well as an opaque one.
Where to take them
To a long evening, a wedding or a work event with plenty of standing and walking. To the office, if you choose a lower heel and a single-colour model. And onto the dance floor, where a secure hold matters more than anything else.
