When a sandal becomes a gladiator
The line is drawn by the number of straps. An ordinary sandal has one strap across the instep and one above the heel. Once the straps start repeating one above the other and forming a pattern of their own, you are into gladiator territory. Pleaser also puts hybrid models here, where the straps run irregularly and cross over the whole instep.
How far the straps reach
The lowest models finish just above the ankle and wear as easily as a sandal. Mid height reaches the middle of the calf and already changes the proportions of the leg noticeably. The tallest gladiators come almost to the knee and become the main event of an outfit — keep the rest of what you wear simple.
Getting into them
Most taller models have a zip at the back, so the buckles are set once and after that the shoe simply zips up. Lower models often fasten buckle by buckle — more work, but you can tighten the fit exactly to your leg. A back zip is the practical choice if you change shoes often.
Colours and materials
Matte black leather is the classic and lets the pattern of the straps speak for itself. Patent adds shine and reads bolder, especially under lights. Gold and silver push the shoe towards either a classical or a futuristic look. Clear straps do the opposite and visually lighten the whole construction.
Where to take them
To festivals and summer parties with a short dress or shorts. To shoots, where the pattern of straps works beautifully in close-up. And to the club, where the taller models combined with a platform make the boldest silhouette.
