Why pole dance needs its own shoe
Pole dance has moved from clubs into fitness studios, and it is now practised by women and men from every walk of life. The shoe plays a different role here than on a dance floor: it has to protect the instep against the pole, give support when you hang, and keep the foot stable at the moment your whole weight transfers onto one leg.
A tall platform is not just for effect
The platform eases the angle of the foot, so your feet last through a longer session. It also forms a rigid surface to brace against on a climb, and it protects the instep from being grazed by the pole. That is exactly why pole dance uses taller platforms than anywhere else in the catalogue.
Exotic, and how it differs
Exotic pole is built on flowing movement across the floor and around the pole, so the shoe has to take sliding and floor contact as well. Models with a clear platform are the most common choice here — they disappear visually and let the line of the leg come through.
Choosing your first pair
Start lower than where you want to end up. Seven to eight centimetres of platform is the usual standard, but less is plenty at the beginning. Choose a model with an ankle strap — it holds the foot securely and you will manage more in it than in a slip-on. And expect your first sessions to be shorter.
Looking after them
A clear platform scratches, so do not drop the shoes loose into a bag with the rest of your kit. Let them dry outside their case after training. And if a mark from the pole appears on the platform, wipe it off straight away — fresh marks come off far more easily.
