What makes a shoe a Mary Jane
One element decides it — a strap across the instep combined with a closed toe. It began as a children's and school shoe, moved into women's fashion over the twentieth century and is now among the most recognisable shapes there is. Pleaser builds it on a high heel and often on a platform too.
The closed toe as an advantage
Unlike sandals and heel slides, the foot is covered here, which changes when and where you can wear the shoe. A Mary Jane works in winter, at work and anywhere an open shoe is out of the question. And on camera it gives a cleaner, more defined shape than open styles.
Retro, pin-up and burlesque
The Mary Jane is a fixture of pin-up and burlesque styling. With a short circle-skirt dress, knee socks or hold-ups it makes an instantly readable retro look. If you want something more contemporary, choose a single-colour patent model with no embellishment.
Heel height and platform
Lower models on a thin sole look the most retro. As the platform grows, the shoe shifts towards club and stage styling. The instep strap holds the foot well throughout, so a taller heel is easier to manage here than in a shoe without one.
