How the types differ

Sandals have a strap across the instep and a second strap above the heel that wraps the foot. Heel slides have no second strap and simply slip on. Ankle strap heels sit higher on the foot, with a firmer heel counter and a wider strap across the instep. Gladiator sandals bring a larger number of straps together into one bold piece.

With or without a platform

A platform lifts the front of the shoe and reduces the angle of the foot, so you can stand and dance in it for far longer. High heel sandals without platform look more delicate and lengthen the leg — they work well with dresses and skirts. Platform models, on the other hand, come into their own on stage, at a shoot and in the club.

Which type to choose when

For summer and light dresses, reach for sandals with slim straps. Heel slides earn their keep when you need to get in and out of them quickly — at a photoshoot or in training, for instance. Ankle strap heels hold the most securely of all, so they will see out a long evening and a night on the dance floor.
